Before I had the opportunity to interview K.T. Hanna about her newest book, SOMNIA ONLINE—INITIALIZING, I had no idea that LitRPG existed. So of course, I was excited to have the chance to ask her lots of questions about it … and I’ve learned a ton. Welcome to the blog, K.T. … and congrats on bringing your newest book into the world!

Tell us about SOMNIA ONLINE BOOK 1: INITIALIZING. What’s it all about, and what was your inspiration for writing it?

My husband and I met in an online roleplaying game called Everquest 2 back in 2005. One of the huge things we've always had in common is a love for playing MMORPGs. He discovered LitRPG before me, and kept asking me to read it, even going as far as to buy me a book in paperback form. Well... I sat down and devoured 10 books in 9 days and realized that there were so many stories I could tell with virtual worlds. I fell in love with the genre in a way I've never loved anything I've written. Tadaaaa…

What’s LitRPG like, as a genre? Is it a new genre, or has it been around for a while? And what do you love most about it?

LitRPG (with hard stats) or GameLit (with game like leveling/progression but no hard stats) isn't really a new genre. I remember reading a book about it in the 80's with Dungeons and Dragons . . . LOL. But it's only recently come more into its own.

I love that it's quite literally like reading a computer game. It's a way for me to get that love of gaming without spending sixteen hours a day glued to the game. When I play games I tend to get so obsessive that I can't write... so this way, I can get my gaming fix while writing (haha).

You’re also the author of THE DOMINO PROJECT trilogy—love those covers! What’s your favorite thing about writing series? And what plotting/planning advice would you give authors who are hard at work on Book 1—but know they plan to write Books 2 & 3 as well?

I think that you have to have the end point of the whole series in mind. If you don't know where it's going, it's very difficult to make sure each book builds up to it well enough.

Do you create your own games—and if so, what’s that process like?

Sadly, I do not create games. At one stage a few years ago I was helping on the lore of one that was in development, but there was a funding kerfuffle. However, I did design the game in Somnia -- I mean, you have to. I'd love to be able to play a game like the one in the world I created, but I don't think our technology is quite there yet.

What’s your greatest dream as an author? Your deepest fear?

My greatest dream? Have a book that people will recommend to others, that touches readers and gives them something they can identify with, that helps maybe, just maybe relieve some of the stress real life gives them by escaping into my worlds.

My greatest fear? Not being able to write. Even if I were to never publish, I'd be devastated if something were to stop me writing.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Discover the class you were born to play.

Wren, a seasoned healer, is dismayed when Somnia Online automatically assigns her character, Murmur, to the Enchanter class. Determined to overcome the unexpected setback, she assembles her guild, intent on the coveted #1 spot. Twelve keys stand between her and victory, but finding them is only part of the puzzle.

Armed with telepathic abilities, Murmur rises to the challenge. However, old rivals have followed her to Somnia Online desperate for revenge. Intricate quest lines become more dangerous as NPCs absorb powerful artifacts, and Murmur begins to wonder just what sort of AI controls the world.

Murmur questions her sanity as the real and virtual worlds mesh together. Everyone is keeping secrets from her, even the AI, and Murmur’s determined to uncover them.
